Afro-Caribbean Percussion Ensemble Tres Bata & Songs Workshop |
THE INTRODUCTION TO MULTI-PERCUSSION CLASS provides an overview of clave, the organizing principle of Afro-Caribbean music. Participants will experience clave in its various forms (folkloric, son, and 6/8) while learning to play basic patterns on drums and small percussion.
THE AFRO-CARIBBEAN PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE is an ongoing class focused on learning a repertoire of songs and rhythms rooted in the underlying structure of clave. Styles include guaguanco, columbia, son, merengue and more. Participants have the opportunity to study each of the parts that make up the ensemble including clave, cata, bell, and conga. This ensemble is always open to new members.
THE BATA AND SONGS CLASS is a new offering that will emphasize the influence of the traditional based music of the bata drums of the Yoruba people of West Africa. The focus will be on learning lead and chorus lines of songs in Yoruba and Spanish. We will explore the praise poetry of the Yoruba Tradition along with the songs associated with the rhythms of rumba and bomba.
THE PROGRESSIVE PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE is an ongoing class for committed students interested in taking their playing to the next level. Building on the repertoire of folkloric and band-style rhythms studied in our Afro-Caribbean Percussion Ensemble, participants will learn to play relaxed at real-time tempos and create a tight ensemble sound.
All classes are taught by percussionist and artisan Wallace Hill.
